These domestic interiors, populated by small groups of uniformed conspirators, provide an arena in which I explore the historical arc of pictorial form and thought. Their narrative is both literary and technical as the human activity depicted interacts with formal and material considerations. In addition to creating light and space, color provides an essential counterpoint to drawing as I balance carefully rendered passages with a direct application of paint in order to create tension between surface quality and illusionistic depth.
Painting searches for authenticity in the means of its production; technique and application must remain open as the piece evolves. My cerulean-, cobalt-, and manganese-clad players strive for integrity and balance. Like their own antiquated medium, they are always struggling and always falling just short. They are ruled by humors. They lash out, paranoid and unreasonable. They bully and argue, betray, and, most of all, hold fast. They participate, unwarned, in a geometry of scale, their speculative forms providing the center - an anchor for the painter’s work and the viewer’s attention.
